How to Install Insulation
When it comes to attic insulation installation, always adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. Below are some things you need to do before you start:
- Check your local building code for the R-value, or insulation level recommendations, in addition to any vapor barrier requirements that are applicable in your area.
- Seal any areas or gaps that will allow unconditioned air into the attic. Pay close attention to any areas where the likes of ductwork, plumbing, or wiring enter the space.
- Measure between each joist if insulating a floor in the attic or studs, if you are insulating unfinished walls, this will provide you with the right width for the insulation. If you are insulating framed walls, make sure that the insulation is the proper thickness for your wall studs.
Choosing your materials
Before you install any insulation, determine which material is best suited for your home. As there are several types of roll and batt insulation. The most common are fiberglass, cellulose, and rock wool:
- Fiberglass is considered the most common material. As it is cost-effective and newer products no longer irritate the skin and lungs. Fiberglass insulation is designed to reduce airflow through the material.
- Cellulose is made using recycled paper and has been treated for fire resistance. The material needs to be packed tightly together in order to resist airflow.
- Rock wool, which is also referred to as slag wool or mineral wool is made by spinning or drawing fibers from molten materials.
Insert the insulation
Gently install the insulation into the cavities between the wall studs. Make sure to pay close attention to all the corners and edges. The insulation has to fit snugly in the cavity, so there are no gaps left.
